In 1951 Duke Ellington premiered "Jam with Sam," a piece intended to showcase several instrumentalists doing solos.

The soloists involved would vary over the years, as band members came and went. But "Jam with Sam" usually concluded with trumpet by Cat Anderson, renowned for his ability to hit very high notes.

Duke Ellington and his orchestra would have this in the regular set list until the late '60s, almost 20 years, despite it not being one of Ellington's defining pieces.
