In 1959 while he was serving in the U.S. Army, Walter Booker formerly a reed player switched to double bass while serving in the same unit as Elvis Presley.

In New York he was hired by Donald Byrd in 1964 opening up opportunities with Ray Bryant, Stan Getz, Art Farmer, Milt Jackson, Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins among others.

Walter joined the "Cannonball Adderley Quintet" in 1969 where he remained until Adderley's 1975 death.
