Raised in Los Angles, California Herb Alpert started trumpet lessons at age eight and began playing for local dances during his teens.

He teamed up with lyricist Rob Weerts in 1957 and over the next couple of years the team produced hit songs including "Baby Talk" and "Wonderful World."

Inspired by the reaction of the crowd at a bull fight during a visit to Tijuana, Alpert personally funded his single "The Lonely Bull" based on an arrangement by Sol Lake which became a top ten hit in 1962.

The rapid release of his debut album of the same title by "Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass" soon followed.

There was no band simply Herb overdubbing his own horn, but by 1964 the demand for live concerts from the group was so great he was forced to hold auditions for to assemble a real "Tijuana Brass."

He worked with the the group until the mid '70s, reassembling a new version of his popular group to perform at the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympic Games.
