After playing in the Orchestra of Noble Sissle, working with Tommy Ladnier, and appearing at Eddie Condon's Town Hall concerts in New York, by the late 1940s Sidney Bechet would have increasing difficulty finding jobs.
As employment prospects dried up Bechet opened a music school but only attracted one student, his protégée, Bob Wilber.
In 1949 an invitation to attend the "Salle Pleyel" Jazz Festival in Paris launched the most prosperous period of his career.
Bechet remained in France for the rest of his life, finally receiving the artistic recognition he deserved.
