Professor Longhair, who had his own way of playing the blues, r&b and New Orleans music, was always in his own musical category.

“Big Chief” is basically a simple blues, but there is nothing simplistic about the unique pianist’s treatment of his hit as can be seen on this clip from the 1973 Montreux Jazz Festival.

Longhair’s mastery of polyrhythms and hot double-time lines sound like no one but himself, as does his singing during the second half of this memorable performance.
