Medeski, Martin & Wood get funky

It is hard to believe that Medeski, Martin & Wood (comprised of keyboardist John Medeski, bassist Chris Wood and drummer Billy Martin) have been together since 1991.

MM&W has not only redefined the piano trio in jazz but, along with their sound explorations, have laid down some of the most infectious funk heard anywhere.

On this clip, “Think,” which was originally recorded for their 1996 Shack-Man album, is performed by the group at the Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy.

Built off of a funky vamp that has a very catchy rhythmic groove set by Medeski, this performance features a Wood bass interlude, strong interplay between the keyboards and bass, and really swings (in its own way) during Medeski’s memorable solo.
