In 1972 Chucho Valdés, together with Gonzalo Rubalcaba, founded Irakere, one the most famous jazz groups in Cuba. His father, Bebo, directed Havana's legendary Tropicana nightclub. His contributions to jazz have earned Chucho five Grammys. Chucho's own son, Chuchito, plays piano in his own right.
The elder Valdés would lead the charge in adding Afro-Cuban rhythms to pop dance tracks.
