A half-hour from 1965 featuring the king of the organ, Jimmy Smith
Jimmy Smith was the one most responsible for the organ being accepted as a jazz instrument, making a major impact in 1956 that has not lessened since.
The dominant influence on his instrument even after his passing, Jimmy Smith is featured on this edition of the British TV series Jazz 625 from May 30, 1965.
With guitarist Quentin Warren and drummer Billy Hart adding to the grooves and taking occasional solos, Smith performs "Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Wolff," a lengthy and swinging version of the medium-tempo blues "The Sermon," "More" (as a slow ballad), "Wagon Wheels" and a closing blues.
Personnel:
Jimmy Smith, organ
Quentin Warren, guitar
Billy Hart, drums
- Scott Yanow
