Montreux Jazz Festival,
Montreux, Switzerland, 1975

Band leader and bassist Charles Mingus wrote “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat” 16 years before this Swiss performance. He would later retitle it more literally as “Theme for Lester Young.” Just a couple of months prior to its composition Lester Young – who was well known for wearing a pork pie hat – died. And so Charles Mingus decided to pay tribute.
