Hawkins started playing professional when he was 12 years old.

On these sessions, he's in his prime at 58, forty-six years of gigging, touring and recording later.

His two chorus solo on the pop standard "Body and Soul" recorded on October 11, 1939 is considered one of the transformative masterpieces of jazz right up there with Louis Armstrong's "West End Blues" in 1928.
