Baritonist Dako plays a heated version of a Sonny Rollins classic
Del Dako was a major baritone-saxophonist from Canada during the 1980s and ‘90s.
In 2001 an accident resulted in a serious back injury and Dako was no longer able to play saxophones.
He switched successfully to the vibes, staying active until near his death in 2013.
This version of Sonny Rollins’ “Airegin” is from 1998 when Dako made a guest appearance on the Vicki Gabereau Show.
Dako takes a strong solo, displaying a deep tone on the baritone that is similar to Pepper Adams and Nick Brignola.
Pianist Bernie Senensky is in excellent form and there is a hot tradeoff with drummer Greg Pilo during the hard-charging performance.
Personnel:
Del Dako, baritone
Bernie Senensky, piano
Duncan Hopkins, bass
Greg Pilo, drums
- Scott Yanow
