God Bless the Child
Eric Dolphy, on bass clarinet, here employs his signature use of intervals – performing a relatively conventional pop cover. He got his start playing with Charles Mingus.
Written by Arthur Herzog and Billie Holiday in 1939, “God Bless the Child” won the 1976 Grammy Hall of Fame Award. Holiday would write years later that the song was inspired by arguing with her mom over cash. Her mother, wrote Holiday, would say that God praised the child that could provide for herself.
