Cables start out classically trained and didn't discover jazz until he was a teenager.

In 1964, at the age of 20, he was playing with Billy Cobham, Lenny White. and Clint Houston in band called The Jazz Samaritans.

Not long after, he recorded with Paul Jeffrey, played on Max Roach's "Lift Every Voice and Sing," and played piano with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers.

Besides leading his own groups, he's played and recorded with Joe Henderson, Roy Haynes, Max Roach, At Pepper, Art Blakey, Sonny Rollins, Woody Shaw, Sarah Vaughan, Tony Williams, Bobby Hutcherson, Dizzy Gillespie, and Freddie Hubbard.
