A Blue Note Classic

Pat Metheny is featured performing "Cantalope Island" with the Herbie Hancock band.

Hancock originally released this classic number on his 1964 Blue Note LP "Empyrean Islesh" while he was still a member of Miles Davis' quintet.

Personnel:

Herbie Hancock, piano
Pat Metheny, guitar
Dave Holland, bass
Jack DeJohnette, drums

Born and raised in the suburbs outside of Kansas City, Pat Metheny began playing guitar in his youth winning a contest for his instrumental talents hosted by Down Beat Magazine when he was just fifteen.

After graduating from high school he attended the University of Miami in 1972 and began teaching there a short time later before moving to Boston to join the faculty at the Berklee College of Music.

Pat made his recording debut in 1974 on sessions for pianist Paul Bley and Carol Goss' Improvising Artists label, also featuring Jaco Pastorius.

In 1975 he emerged on the jazz scene as a member of vibraphonist Gary Burton's band and has since collaborate and performed with musicians including Dave Holland, Roy Haynes, Jim Hall, Chick Corea, Charlie Haden, John Scofield, Jack DeJohnette, Herbie Hancock, Ornette Coleman, and Michael Brecker.

Forming his own band the "Pat Metheny Group" in 1977 he continues to tour and create, with his latest album "KIN" released on the Nonesuch label in February 2014.
