New Orleans, baby

If someone told me I could only hear one sound, it would be a hard call, but definitely on my very short list would be the sound of New Orleans drummers.

I could listen to these guys all day and night long.

I love all drummers, but that street parade sound that New Orleans drummers like Ed Blackwell, Idris Muhammad, Baby Dodds, "Smokey" Johnson, and others, have in their DNA is pure magic to me.

So clean, so musical, so multi-dimensional.

They're not flash - though they have the chops to be. Instead they choose to be - and can be - deep.

I believe this was recorded in Pittsburgh at a jazz festival held there. There's no info on a date.
