July 2, 1930 —

Written by Nat Simon in 1936, “Poinciana” has since become a jazz standard. Cuban folk melody “La canción del árbol” – in English, “The Song of the Tree” – proved inspirational to Simon's composition.

In addition to Ahmad Jamal, jazz musicians Keith Jarrett and Bing Crosby (sometimes jazz, albeit with a more pop sound) helped to popularize this song.

Personnel:

Ahmad Jamal, piano
James Cammack, bass
Idris Muhammad, drums
