Jean Thielemans receive his famous nickname "Toots" after alto saxophonist Toots Mondello, and trumpeter composer-arranger Salvador "Toots" Camarata known for his work with Benny Goodman.

In 1950 the Belgium born guitarist and harmonica player came to the attention of an international audience when he joined Goodman for a concert tour of Europe.
