The roots of jazz

We don't have any recordings of Buddy Bolden - and only one picture - but everyone who heard him play says he was something else.

Louis Armstrong heard him and so did Jelly Roll Morton.

This clip features Morton playing back those memories through the tune "Buddy Bolden's Blues."

New Orleans was the Athen of jazz. The art spread further and took on many different forms, but the spark started there.

Getting the story straight from Jelly Roll is as close as we'll ever get to understanding those early tremendously fertile days.
