During the 1970s Jimmy Smith contented himself for a time as owner and operator of a Los Angles supper club where he performed regularly with a band that included saxophonists John F. Phillips and Herman Riley.

Riley would later tour with smith as a member of his Quartet during the 1980s and '90s.
