Born and raised in Tampa, Florida, Julian "Cannonball" Adderley was already an established musician when he moved to New York in the mid-1950s.

After sitting in with Oscar Pettiford's band at the Cafe Bohemia establishing a name as a top hard bop saxophonist Cannonball assembled his own group in 1957 with his brother, trumpeter Nat Adderley.

In October 1957, he joined the "Miles Davis Sextet" three month prior to John Coltrane's return performing on the albums "Milestones" and "Kind of Blue".

Upon leaving Davis' group, Cannonball reformed his Quintet which would rapidly grow to become a sextet.

In 1961 his interest in music education merged with his recording career when he narrated the Riverside Records release "A Child's Introduction to Jazz".

Towards the end of the '60s Cannonball Adderley's style began to reflect an avant-garde influence evident on albums such as "Accent on Africa" (1968) and "The Price You Got to Pay to Be Free" (1970).

He started doubling on soprano sax displaying the influence of John Coltrane and gave a memorable appearance with his quintet at the 1970 Monterey Jazz Festival.

Julian "Cannonball" Adderley died from a stroke on August 8, 1975 and was buried at the Southside Cemetery in Tallahassee, Florida.
