Santa Barbara County Bowl, 1979

Written by Charles Mingus, and first recorded in 1959 by Mingus's sextet, “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat” was a tribute to sax player Lester Young. The more recent – and less well-known – name for the song is “Theme for Lester Young.” The name derives from Young's reputation from wearing a style of hat resembling a pork pie dish.

And so this Joni Mitchell rendition comes off of her Mingus tour, although Mingus' compositions made up only a fraction of her set.

Personnel:

Joni Mitchell- electric guitar, vocals
Pat Metheny - lead guitar
Jaco Pastorius - bass
Don Alias - drums
Lyle Mays - keyboards
Michael Brecker - saxophone
