Remembering Juan Formell

Juan Formell leads Los Van Van featuring Cesar "Puppy" Pedroso in 1984.

Leaning to play bass as a young boy in Havana, Cuba, Juan Formell sepent several years beginning in 1959 performing with the Musical Band of Revolutionary Police.

Later, playing clubs he began developing a new style of dance music that would be revealed with the formation of his group "Los Van Van."

This new sound known as "songo" first introduced with their 1972 single "Pero a mi Manera" introduced concepts never before applied to Latin music.

The extremely popular genre would lead to the birth of another known as "buey cansado" during the 1980s.

He toured South and Central America, Asia and the Soviet Union and released a number of hit records with "Los Van Van" in addition to several solo albums also featuring the band.
