Keith Jarrett tears into the piano in 1967

Back in 1967, pianist Keith Jarrett was a member of one of the most popular groups in jazz, the Charles Lloyd Quartet.

While Jarrett would become much better known in the 1970s for his solo piano performances, he was already on his way up during his period with Lloyd.

This clip is an excerpt from a much longer performance by the Lloyd Quartet that took place at a concert in 1967 in Prague, Czechoslovakia.

Jarrett, who was 22, builds up his solo and for a stretch plays both free and melodically at the same time; he really attacks the piano while always swinging with the trio.

This is an early glimpse of a jazz master.

Personnel:

Keith Jarrett, piano
Ron McClure, bass
Jack DeJohnette, drums

- Scott Yanow
