Classical music student Margaret Marian Turner developed an intrest in American jazz leaving London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1938 to tour with "Billy Mayerl's Claviers."

The vaudeville group consisting of four pianists toured Europe performing on the USO circuit where Marion would meet her future husband cornetist Jimmy McPartland in 1944. They were married the same year.

Following their arrival in the U.S. after the war the McPartlands left Chicago in 1949 settling in Manhattan.

Marion McPartland formed a trio which became the resident band at the Hickory House jazz club for an eight year stretch beginning in 1952.

Her recordings span from 1951 to 2008 and included 1970s “Ambiance” and 1977s “Now’s the Time”.

On June 4, 1978 she began hosting "Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz" which would become the longest running NPR series.

The program, featuring a variety of musical guests, was hosted by Marion until September 2010.

Marian received numerous honorary degrees in her lifetime from universities including the Eastman School of Music and Ithaca College.

Additionally she won over 10 awards, among them the “Down Beat Lifetime Achievement Award” in 1994 and the “Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Award” in 2000.
