A brief version of the Star Trek theme
by the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra

Maynard Ferguson, a great high-note trumpeter who could also play bebop, went through several different phases in his long career.

In 1977, when he appeared on the Mike Douglas Show, he was having success with his hit record of the “Theme From Rocky,” and he hoped for similar acclaim for his version of the “Theme From Star Trek.”

During this brief performance, Biff Hannon on the synthesizer begins the piece with some electronics.

Ferguson plays a bit, drummer Peter Erskine drives the band, and Bobby Militello contributes some flute before the show concludes.

It makes for an interesting time capsule.
