A hot version of a Jelly Roll Morton tune
by a top Danish band

The Peruna Jazzmen has been one of the top Danish hot jazz groups since it was formed in 1959.

Although “Chicago Breakdown” was composed by Jelly Roll Morton, Morton never actually recorded it and the most famous version features Louis Armstrong’s Stompers in 1927, a small big band based in Chicago.

While the Peruna Jazzmen largely recreate Armstrong’s playing (cornetist Mikael Zuschlag does a fine job), the Johnny Dodds-inspired clarinet solo from Claus Forchhammer is fresh and not a recreation.

The Peruna Jazzmen does a fine job of sounding as if they were playing this song in 1927.

Personnel:

Mikael Zuschlag, cornet
Peter Aller, cornet
Arne Hojberg, trombone
Claus Forchhammer, clarinet
Annette Strauss, piano
John Neess, banjo
Leo Hechmann, tuba
Mik Schack, washboard

- Scott Yanow
