Live in France - 1971
At the age of 37, Phil Woods move to France in 1968 where he led a group called the European Rhythm Machine. They explored the avant-garde side of jazz.
The 1960s were an exciting time for jazz, but they were very tough commercially. The onslaught of rock and roll created what was in effect a Jazz Depression.
As usual, thank goodness for Europe (and Japan) that provided the musicians with opportunities they could not dream of at the time back home.
Phil Woods; alto sax and leader
Gordan Beck: piano
Ron Matthewson: bass
Daniel Humair; drums
