Woodstock 1969

Some of the greatest musical musical performances have been created under duress.

For example, when Keith Jarrett played the legendary Koln Concert, he was so ill that he had seriously considered canceling the gig.

This performance by Richie Havens is remarkable for a number of reasons.

First, he was lead off performer for the entire festival.

Second, because all the other performers were stuck in traffic (!), the promoters had him do set after set after set to keep the audience together. Something he was not prepared for. (He later said he played every song he knew.)

Third, the song and performance for which he is most famous "Freedom" was the eleventh song in his set - and here's the big one - it was created right on the spot as an encore.

Is it "jazz?" You tell me. Improvised music for sure.
