Coleman Hawkins, Maxine Sullivan and Tyree Glenn
are among the stars on this edition of Art Ford's Jazz Party

In 1958, Art Ford hosted a weekly 90-minute televised “Jazz Party” that featured some of the top swing musicians of the time.

While many of the 33 broadcasts do not seem to still exist, fortunately there are long excerpts from a few of the priceless programs.

The Sept. 18, 1958 show has no less than a dozen selections that have survived: “Basin Street Blues” (the program’s theme), “I Found A New Baby,” “Jeepers Creepers” (featuring trombonist Tyree Glenn), “Ace In The Hole” (with singer Maxine Sullivan), “Lover Come Back To Me” (featuring a young Roland Hanna on piano), “It Must Be Love” (with clarinetist Hank D’Amico”), a couple of numbers for guest pianist Alec Templeton (a “Bach Chorale” that becomes “Stardust” and “Moonglow”), trumpeter Johnny Windhurst in top form on “Pennies From Heaven,” Maxine Sullivan on “I Can’t Get Started,” and two features (“Just You, Just Me” and “Prisoner Of Love”) for the great tenor-saxophonist Coleman Hawkins.

It is quite a program of classic jazz.
