Lacy takes a furious solo and talks about the soprano sax

Steve Lacy (1934-2004) was the master of the soprano-saxophone, devoting his musical career exclusively to that instrument for over 45 years.

Lacy’s career ranged from his roots in Dixieland to a complete study of Thelonious Monk’s music and developing his own free form style.

On this brief but intriguing clip which features Lacy playing a furious solo with his regular group in the 1980s, he is heard a bit talking over the music, discussing the difficulties of playing soprano which he says is “like riding a wild horse.”
