Pianist, bandleader, composer, arranger and educator Barry Doyle Harris was born December 15, 1929 in Detroit.
Harris began learning piano at age 4 from his mother, who was a church pianist.
His style was influenced by his mother along with artists he listened to such as Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell.
During the 1950's, Harris played with Miles Davis and Sonny Stitt.
In 1960, Harris moved to New York, where he became a jazz educator and continued to grow as a musician, recording 19 albums as the featured artist.
Barry Harris performs his interpretation of the Rodgers & Hart classic "I Didn't Know What Time It Was".
From 1982 until 1987 he operated the Jazz Cultural Theater at 368 Eighth Avenue in Manhattan.
Mr. Harris continues to be a jazz educator worldwide utilizing his own teaching process.
