Buddy Tate (1913-2001) gained fame in the jazz world as one of Count Basie’s tenor-saxophonist soloists during 1939-48.

Tate had a long and productive career in the years after Basie, always displaying a distinctive sound and a hard-driving style.

This excerpt features Tate’s solo on an uptempo version of “Jumpin’ At The Woodside” with what was billed as a Count Basie alumni band, live from the 1979 Northsea Jazz Festival.

Personnel:

Buddy Tate, tenor sax
Arnett Cobb, tenor sax
Hank Jones, piano
Gene Ramey, bass
Gus Johnson, drums

- Scott Yanow
