An incredibly influential double bassist of the post bop era, Cecil McBee was born in 1935 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

He began playing the clarinet in high school but switch to bass earning a degree in music from Ohio Central State University.

After gaining experience accompanying Dinah Washington, Cecil spent time in Detroit during the early '60s performing with Paul Winter's folk-jazz ensemble prior to his move to New York in 1964.

Although McBee has only made a hand full of recording in the '70s as a leader himself, the jazz bassist performed and recorded with a number of significant musicians including Miles Davis, Jackie McLean, Keith Jarrett, Sam Rivers, Charles Lloyd, Yusef Lateef, Alice Coltrane, Freddie Hubbard, and Woody Shaw.

He would release his first solo effort "Mutima" in 1974 followed by two chamber jazz based albums as leader "Flying Out" (1982) and "Compassion" (1983).

In 1997 Cecil recorded "Unspoken" an LP featuring his European touring quintet.

Cecil McBee is currently a factuality member at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.
