Fort Worth, Texas native Dewey Redman was the father of fellow jazz saxophonist Joshua Redman.
While attending Prairie View Agricultural and Mechanical University during the early 1950s he transitioned from playing clarinet, to alto, and finally tenor sax.
Over the course of his storied career Redman would collaborate with Keith Jarrett, Charlie Haden, Ornette Coleman and Pat Metheny.
