Dexter Gordon stretches out on an uptempo blues

Dexter Gordon, one of jazz’s great tenor-saxophonists, was near the start of his 14-year period spent living and playing in Europe (1962-76) when he was filmed performing in Holland in 1964.

On a song that he introduces as Sonny Stitt’s “Loose Walk” (it is the same as Clifford Brown’s “Blues Walk”), Gordon takes an extended solo that never runs out of colorful and inventive ideas.

Pianist George Gruntz (who would become a significant big band leader and arranger in a few years) takes a boppish solo as does bassist Guy Pedersen while drummer Daniel Humair has a brief tradeoff with Gordon.

Bop fans will enjoy this one.

Personnel:

Dexter Gordon, tenor
George Gruntz, piano
Guy Pedersen, bass
Daniel Humair, drums
