“Oo Papa Pa Da” is an uptempo blues from the late 1940s that Dizzy Gillespie used to sing with Joe Carroll in his early 1950s band.

However it was obvious that Gillespie did not need to carry a vocalist with his band because he could outsing most of them, particularly when it came to scatting.

Proof of that can be seen in this clip filmed in Finland in the late 1970s with some fine local musicians.

After Gillespie takes a trumpet solo, he engages in some virtuosic scat-singing at the rapid tempo, somehow sounding relaxed while the rhythm section never lets up.

A fun performance.
