Antibes, 1979

Earl Hines performs a stunning solo rendition of "St. Louis Blues" at this 1979 concert in Antibes, France.

Hines' influence on the development of jazz cannot be overstated. When he emerged in the '20s, playing with Chicago musicians like Louis Armstrong, his rhythmic, technical style was radically different than that of any other pianist. His playing was an enormous influence on future beboppers in his band like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie.
