Pianist Herbie Hancock originally recorded “Maiden Voyage” on Mar. 17, 1965 with a quintet also featuring trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, tenor-saxophonist George Coleman, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Tony Williams.

31 years later, in Aug. 1986, Hancock led a similar group (with Joe Henderson in Coleman’s place) on a long version of “Maiden Voyage” at the Mt. Fuji Jazz Festival in Japan.

During the first half of the performance, Hubbard and Henderson both create explorative improvisations that, while keeping the theme in mind, take the song into inventive areas.

Personnel:

Herbie Hancock, piano
Freddie Hubbard, trumpet
Joe Henderson, tenor
Ron Carter, bass
Tony Williams, drums
