The pianist draws a lot of emotion out of the ballad

Gene Harris (1933-2000) was well known as a soulful jazz pianist who could really stomp on uptempo material and dig into the blues.

This version of “My Foolish Heart,” performed with bassist John Heard and drummer Jimmie Smith at Otto Crest in 1981, gives one a look at another side of Harris’ personality.

The ballad is taken quite slow as Harris plays a quietly emotional rendition, uncovering a lot of beauty during his gorgeous version.

Personnel:

Gene Harris, piano
John Heard, bass
Jimmie Smith, drums
