Branford Marsalis put this together for the show "Modern Jazz Classics"

The composer: George Gershwin.

This program is about what Miles Davis and Gil Evans did with it.

Some background about Porgy and Bess, not on this video:

1. Porgy and Bess is technically an "opera"
2. The music was written in 1934 by George Gershwin with libretto about DoBose Heyward
3. It was not popular when it was introduced
4. Gershwin first thought about this project in 1926 when he read the book the opera is based on "Porgy"
5. He did extensive research with Heryward in South Carolina before writing the music

The world premiere was September 30, 1935 in Boston.
