A full hour set with the 1964 Miles Davis Quintet

Imagine being transported back to the fall of 1964 and getting to experience a full set of the Miles Davis Quintet.

Thanks to the existence of this lengthy film clip, which was originally televised on Italian television, one can relive the experience.

While Miles Davis had been playing regularly with pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Tony Williams since mid-1963, tenor-saxophonist Wayne Shorter, who succeeded George Coleman and Sam Rivers, had just been with his band for a couple of months when this concert took place.

Here is the second classic Miles Davis Quintet (the first was the 1955-60 group with John Coltrane), performing “Autumn Leaves,” ”My Funny Valentine,” “All Blues,” “All Of You,” “Joshua,” and a brief “The Theme.”

Now you know why the internet was born.

Personnel:

Miles Davis, trumpet
Wayne Shorter, tenor
Herbie Hancock, piano
Ron Carter, bass
Tony Williams, drums
