Partial crippled in his right hand as the result of childhood polio Horace Parlan overcame his handicap by developing a stronger left hand chord voicing.

He became an exceptional pianist working with Sonny Stitt from 1952 to 1957 followed by a two year stint with Charles Mingus' Jazz Workshop.

Horace Parlan was featured on two Charles Mingus records "Mingus Ah Um" and "Blues & Roots."

Parlan moved to Copenhagen, Denmark during the early '70s later relocating to Rude, a small village in Southern Zealand.

He was the recipient of the Ben Webster Foundation's 2000 Ben Webster Prize.
