Horace Silver joined the ranks of Cannonball Adderley, Art Blakey and Miles Davis in pioneering hard bop. This quintet's specific choice of instrumentation -- the tenor sax, trumpet, piano, drums and double bass -- would define the sound sought by smaller jazz groups in the '50s and '60s.

Personnel:

Horace Silver, piano
Blue Mitchell, trumpet
Junior Cook, tenor sax
Gene Taylor, bass
Louis Hayes, drums
