16 minutes with Jaco and the Gil Evans Orchestra

The innovative electric bassist Jaco Pastorius became famous during his period with Weather Report (1976-81).

After going out on his own, he led the Word of Mouth big band and made a variety of guest appearances, including touring with Gil Evans’ Orchestra in 1984.

During a 16-minute mini set with the Evans band in Japan, Pastorius is dominant even when he is not soloing, pushing the other players through a frequently intense rendition of “The Chicken,” which features trumpeter Hannibal Peterson and trombonist George Lewis.

Jaco returns for an unaccompanied rendition of “America The Beautiful.”

Personnel:

Gil Evans, keyboards
Jaco Pastorius, electric bass
Lew Soloff, trumpet
Hannibal Marvin Peterson, trumpet
Miles Evans, trumpet
George Lewis, trombone
Chris Hunter, alto
George Adams, tenor
Howard Johnson tuba, baritone sax
Peter Levin, synthesizer
Hiram Bullock, guitar
Mark Egan, bass
Adam Nussbaum, drums
