Bern, Switzerland, 1985

South Carolina native Dizzy Gillespie earned his nickname from outlandish antics. The most notorious of these involved an incredibly rocky relationship with Cab Calloway, in whose band he played. Calloway didn't approve of Gillespie's overtly avant-garde approach to solos and became wholly livid after he suspected Gillespie of intentionally emptying gobs of saliva.

Gillespie would collaborate with such jazz greats as Sonny Rollins, Roy Eldridge, Ray Brown, Max Roach – and of course James Moody.

Personnel:

Dizzy Gillespie, trumpet
James Moody, tenor sax
Gene Harris, piano
Ray Brown, bass
Grady Tate, drums
