At the Vitoria-Gasteiz Jazz Festival on July 19, 1991, the Manhattan Transfer enthusiastically welcomed Jon Hendricks as their guest for Sonny Rollins’ "Airegin."

It seemed only fair since Hendricks wrote the vocalese lyrics to that number and many other songs performed by the superb vocal group through the years.

This uptempo version, which has some brilliant singing by Janis Siegel, a unison chorus from Tim Hauser and Alan Paul, a vocalese chorus from Cheryl Bentyne, some exciting scatting from Hendricks (check out the high notes!) and choruses by tenor-saxophonist Chris Hunter and electric bassist Alex Blake, is a classic.
