The tenor-saxophonist gets hot in 1994

One of the finest tenor-saxophonists of the past 25 years, Joshua Redman is equally skilled at playing originals and standards, ballads and uptempo jams.

The well-titled “Straight Ahead” is an encore from a 1994 Belgium concert.

Redman, at first unaccompanied and then with his quartet, takes a blazing solo at a fast tempo for many choruses including a few that use a stop-time rhythm.

After Redman builds up to an intense level, pianist Jonny King and bassist Christian McBride also take worthy solos before the film unfortunately stops before drummer Brian Blade gets his say.

Personnel:

Joshua Redman, tenor
Jonny King, piano
Christian McBride, bass
Brian Blade, drums

- Scott Yanow
