October 11, 1941-November 8, 1999
Trumpeter and composer Lester Bowie was born on October 11, 1941 in Frederick, Maryland.
Before moving to Chicago, Bowie worked as a rhythm and blues trumpeter, appearing with Joe
Tex, Rufus Thomas, and others.
He was a founding member of the landmark avant-garde group Art Ensemble of Chicago.
Unlike many other avant-garde musicians of his caliber, Bowie’s humorous approach embraced older jazz styles as well blues and reggae.
One of the true trumpet greats.
Lester Bowie brought great energy, creativity and FUN to the instrument.
Raised musically in St. Louis, he went on to become a member of the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians) and a co-founder of the Art Ensemble of Chicago.
He was also one of the co-founder of the Black Artists Group (BAG) in St Louis.
