Lonnie Liston Smith's early influence came from his father who was a member of "The Harmonizing Four" Gospel group.
Moving to New York in 1963 he became the pianist for Betty Carter's band.
Smith's recording debut came in early 1965 with Rahsaan Roland Kirk and his band on "Here Comes The Whistleman."
Liston spent less than a year with Art Blakey's "Jazz Messengers" beginning in late 1965 and returned to playing with Roland Kirk by 1967. After this he joined Pharoah Sanders' in early 1968.
Lonnie finally formed a group of his own 'Lonnie Liston Smith and the Cosmic Echoes' in 1973 after leaving Miles Davis' ever changing ensemble.
