The tenor-saxophonist leads an impressive group on his original blues

Lucky Thompson had a productive if episodic career that included being the tenor-saxophone soloist with Count Basie in the mid-1940s, playing on many classic bebop sessions, performing in Europe during a few periods overseas, and retiring in the early 1970s.

Thompson was not filmed very often but in 1960 he was featured on a television show broadcast from the Blue Note club in Paris.

During his unidentified blues, Thompson leads and conducts a septet, giving concise but colorful solo space to each of his sidemen while confining himself to the melody statement.

Featured are baritonist Sahib Shihab, trombonist Jimmy Cleveland, altoist Joe Rasko, trumpeter Leonard C. Johnson, bassist Buddy Catlett and drummer Kenny Clarke.
